"Your task is not to seek love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it."
So with the start of 2020 many people must have chalked out big plans for their businesses. Getting a new place, equipment, new courses, official bank accounts for the business (current account), etc. But amongst all this, have you thought about getting an FSSAI registration for your home bakery? It’s one of the most important documents that most of us don’t apply for, either because we are ignorant or lazy.
FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India which implements the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2011. As per the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, FSSAI registration is a mandatory requirement for food operators across the country. In this, home bakers come under the Petty Food Business category. Therefore, it is very important for home bakers to get this registration done.
The two options available under the FSSAI are License and Registration. The license is granted at the Central and State level; the former for medium to large enterprises, and the latter for medium enterprises. Registration is only done at one level and is mainly for petty food businesses.
Home bakers are likely to fall under the FSSAI Registration category. Apart from the various manufacturers and producers who also come under this category, home bakers will fall under this if they are – a wholesaler, retailer, distributor or supplier – having a turnover of up to 12 lakhs per annum. It is safe to assume that home bakers fall under this category, not just because of the amount cap for turnover, but also because the Licence category at the State level is only for medium level enterprises that have many employees, a much higher turnover and more licenses required.
Now, how to actually register? You can apply online on the FSSAI website. You will have to click on the Sign Up (Self Care) portal. Use your mobile number and email ID to sign up. Fill the details in the Online Application Form. It will take time to do so and you will need the scanned copies of the below listed documents on your computer system beforehand, including a handwritten, filled and signed Form B. Once you complete and submit, you will get a reference number to track your application. Use this to check your application status. This is the end of the registration process, now all you have to do is wait to get your registration approved!
The documents that are required for the FSSAI Registration :-
- Photo Identity Proof of Owners of the Food Business
- Proof of Possession of Premises (Rent Agreement / Electricity or Water Bill)
- Certificate of Incorporation/ Memorandum of Association/ Partnership Deed/ Articles of Association
- List of Food Products – processed or stored or manufactured
- Food Safety Management system plan
- Signed and Completed Form-B which can be found on the FSSAI website
Hope this information is useful and I see many of my baker buddies checking this off from their bucket list!
