One always tends to get attracted to the free products that a company offers. The company does this to gain profit and to engage the customer to their products. Whether it’s make-up, food or health products, the business of these things are rising day by day. But today’s generation is so unique and different that they love to innovate and discover their own things at home.
Being a dentist, I observe so many people nowadays suffering from oral health problems. Oral issues like bad-breath, yellowing of teeth, bleeding gums, tooth-ache, food lodgement, caries, tooth-sensitivity, etc. have become so common today. But, as you know, there is always a solution to a problem and you have to remember one point that each and every oral problems can be treated or solved at home if it is in a initial stage, but after that you have to visit a good dentist. Before moving on to the dental products or before using them, you must have knowledge about the short causes of the oral health problems:-
Now, after you have come to know all about the causes of oral health problems, lets directly jump on to the home-made dental products, which is easy to manufacture (DIY) at home and for sure it’s going to help you during this stressful situation of COVID-19 LOCKDOWN.
1. Bad Breath:-
Here are few home-made products/remedies for bad breath:
- Chew fresh leaves of parsley after each meal.
- Keep yourself hydrated (drink 2-3 litres of water every day).
- Eat yoghurt every day.
- Home-made mouthwash:
Make a tongue cleaner for yourself:-
First of all wash your palms properly, especially the fingers. Now, take a pinch of salt on your finger and apply it firmly on the tongue. After 30 seconds, wash your mouth with clean water.
2. Yellowing Of Teeth:-
Few famous home-made products to remove the yellow-discolouration from teeth:
- Make paste as follows:
- Baking soda (1 tablespoon) + Hydrogen peroxide (2 tablespoon) = Beautiful
- Mix 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with 177mL of water and swish the solution for at least 20-30 seconds. Then, rinse with water and brush your teeth.
- Rubbing your teeth with banana peels can make your teeth white.
- You can also use capsules of activated charcoal. Just put the contents on your toothbrush and brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes, wash your mouth and then spit it out, but be careful regarding your gums because it can be harmful to them.
- Take a pinch of turmeric powder + half pinch of salt + 2-3 drops of mustard oil and apply the mixture on your teeth with the help of toothbrush and then wash your mouth with clean water.
Clove oil + coconut oil:-
Mix coconut oil (1 teaspoon) with clove oil (2-3 drops) properly. Rub this mixture directly on the gums and leave it on for 5-10 minutes. Use this solution twice a day.
The tannic acid present in tea bags can prevent the blood clotting by constricting blood vessels. Black tea bags are mostly preferred.
First of all, dampen the tea bag in hot water and place it over your gums and slightly bite down. Then hold it in place for about 5 minutes before removing it gently. Do this at least twice a day.
Nowadays, everyone have aloe-vera gel in their home. It has good anti-bacterial anti-inflammatory properties, which helps to reduce the gum complications.
Take a teaspoon of aloe vera gel, apply it on the gums and massage smoothly. Leave it for a few minutes before rinsing your mouth clean. Try to follow this at least twice a day.
Just like cloves, peppermint also has numbing properties which can soothe a toothache.
Take 1 teaspoon of dried peppermint leaves and put them in a cup of boiling water and stir for 20 minutes. After it gets cooled, swish around in the mouth, then spit it out.
A little warm, wet tea bag can also be used and held against the tooth for several minutes until the pain gets reduced.
Many of you are unaware of the whisky’s special feature. Whisky or brandy is a good pain reliever for toothache. So, if you have whisky/brandy at home then:
Take a cotton ball and soak it in some whisky/brandy. Apply the soaked ball on your tooth to reduce the pain.
3. Bleeding Gums:
Minor bleeding gums can be treated at home as follows:
Use warm salt rinse:
Add half a teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of warm water. Swish the salt rinse around the mouth to cleanse the area and then spit the liquid out. This rinse will help to reduce bacteria and the healing time will increase.
Apply turmeric paste to the gums as it helps to improve the symptoms of inflammation of gums and bleeding gums.
Try oil pulling:-
This is one of the most famous ancient Ayurvedic treatment. Swish specific oil in the mouth for up to 15-20 minutes and then spit it out. This improves oral health. You can use coconut oil for 10 minutes every day for a week. This helps to spit out the bacteria from the mouth.
Tea tree oil and coconut oil:-
Take 1-2 drops of tea tree oil and a teaspoon of coconut oil. Mix them smoothly and then gently massage this solution on to your gums. Do not remove the solution till 5-10 minutes. Next, rinse your mouth with clean water thoroughly.
**Maintain this routine twice every day.
It contains powerful antibacterial properties. A fresh piece of garlic should first be crushed and then it is mixed with a little salt. Apply the mixture on to the affected tooth
Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and swish around in the mouth for about 20-30 seconds before spitting out. This process can be repeated as much as required.

These have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, which can help to fight toothache and gum infections.
Gently, chew the dried whole clove to release its oil and hold it in place against the affected tooth for up to 30 minutes.
You can also soak a small cotton ball with clove oil and apply it to the area affected by the painful tooth.
5. Food Lodgement:-
During this lockdown, it’s very tough to go outside and buy toothpaste, toothbrush or mouthwashes, so, let’s see how we can prepare these things at home by following just few simple steps:
This is a good source of Vitamin A and E, also with iron, calcium and magnesium. It also has anti-bacterial properties that prevent cavities and tooth decay.
Mix 1 part of wheatgrass juice with 6 parts of water and rinse the mouth with it.
6. Dental Caries/Cavity:
As you know lemons are rich in Vitamin C. The acids present in lemon juice kill the germs and help in easing pain caused by the cavities.
Keep a lemon in your mouth, chew it and then rinse your mouth with clean water.
In older times people used to brush their teeth with neem sticks instead of a brush. The fibre content in neem keeps plaque away from your mouth.
Just chew neem leaves and then immediately rinse your mouth with water. It remains the traditional solution to every medical condition in every household.
These have calcium carbonate in them which removes the decay and refills the mineral back in the enamel.
First of all clean the eggshell and boil it and then further dry and grind it into powder. Add baking soda and coconut oil to the powder and use it as toothpaste. Keep the paste in an air-tight container.
The leaves helps to relieve tooth sensitivity.
Just chew few leaves for 2-3 minutes and spit them before you rinse your mouth. If you don’t want to chew them, then place 4-5 leaves in a pan with a cup of water and boil it. Add a pinch of salt and use it as a mouthwash.
Use warm saline water as explained earlier
Onion has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.
Cut an onion piece in a way that it fits into your mouth. Place the piece on the affected area and leave it for about 5 minutes. After taking it out, thoroughly rinse your mouth with saltwater. This will help in relieving tooth-sensitivity.
Honey with warm water:-
Honey has anti-bacterial as well as anti-inflammatory properties.
Rinse your mouth with a solution of warm water and a teaspoon of honey. It will heal the tooth-sensitivity.

These are easy to manufacture at home by yourself and not only solves your oral problems, but also helps to maintain the best oral-hygiene specially during tough situations.
